The Coaching Process
Step One: Consultation
One-on-one coaching begins with an initial consultation which allows me to understand a potential client’s strengths and needs. I often receive feedback from the individual’s manager at this stage, and this frequently includes a description of how valuable this employee is to the organization, and how they could grow even more by addressing these areas.
Step Two: Assessment
Once I have learned about the needs and objectives, I speak with the individual and complete an assessment. Depending on the stated objectives, that may involve looking at writing samples or determining specific oral language needs. In performing an assessment, I rely on my linguistic knowledge as well as my years of experience coaching and training professionals.
Step Three: Design & Coaching
After the consultation, I put together a proposal for coaching that includes objectives, learning points, time frame, cost, and logistics. Typically I work with a client over the course of several weeks, meeting remotely once a week. Our sessions consist of information, exercises, activities, and feedback, all aimed at practicing the targeted skills in realistic scenarios. My client and I agree on application and reflection work to complete between sessions.
Step Four: Follow Up
After each weekly session, I provide a summary of learning points and weekly goals. At the completion of the coaching, my client receives an ongoing learning plan so that they can continue making progress and implementing changes. I set up a follow-up date to catch up several weeks after the completion of our coaching sessions.
